What is the Rezum Procedure?

The Instituto da Próstata is one of the first clinics in Portugal to provide the new Rezum procedure to treat prostate gland enlargement.

This new procedure treats BPH effectively and less aggressively than those used until now.

It has various benefits:

No hospitalisation required;
No effect on sexual function;
Patients do not need to continue taking medication with the respective side effects.

Scientific studies show that the improvements were consistent and remained after 5 years of treatment – unlike other methods to treat BPH which have only short-term results with frequent recurrence of issues after some time.

Therefore, it can be useful in many patients with prostate-related problems as an alternative to medication, surgery and other BPH procedures.

Benefits of the Rezum Procedure

Rezum is an effective and less aggressive BPH procedure than those used until now.
The benefits of this treatment include:

No need to take medication

Long-lasting results with less recurrence

The procedure is minimally invasive and does not require a hospital stay.

A great benefit is the fact that it does not cause retrograde ejaculation, an important aspect for young or sexually active patients.

The Rezum procedure avoids the side effects of the medication used in BPH treatment, such as hypotension, erectile dysfunction, reduced libido and reduced/lack of ejaculation.

How is the Rezum Procedure Performed?

The procedure is quick and easy.

Minimally invasive, it is performed with sedation or local anaesthetic, so the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure.

The Rezum procedure targets controlled and directed doses of water vapour-released thermal energy at the prostatic tissue.

The energy from the water vapour kills the cells and flushes them from the body, reducing the size of the prostate.

In this way, the typical urinary issues in these cases, including urinating at night, urinating often, a sudden need to urinate, a weak/thin jet of urine, sensation of not having emptied the bladder and difficulty in starting to urinate, are gradually relieved.

What is the Post-Treatment?

After the procedure and due to the oedema in the treated area, the patient returns home with a catheter to drain the urine from the bladder. This will remain inserted for a few days.

The patient can resume their normal activities after several days. The symptoms will begin to ease after two weeks. Maximum improvement will be felt around 3 months after the procedure and will remain from that point onwards.

After 5 years, 96% of patients do not need any other further treatment. Studies reveal that improvements are seen in a variety of indicators, such as:

Patient’s quality of life;
BPH impact index;
Score in questionnaires about prostate-related symptoms;
Maximum flow measured on a uroflowmeter.

Therefore, this is a very promising procedure with major benefits compared to traditional methods.
